Tanah Lot is a tourist
attraction in Bali, Indonesia. There are two temples on a big rock. One is
located on top of boulder and other is located on top of a cliff that juts into
the sea. This cliff connects temple with mainland and the shape is curved like
a bridge.
Tanah Lot temple is
part of “Pura Kahyangan Jagat” in
Bali, as a place to worship god of the sea guards. Tanah Lot temple will seen
surrounded by sea during high tides. Underneath there is a small cave with some
sea snakes, which have characteristics of a flat tail like a fish, striped
black colored yellow.
This beautiful scenery
attracts many tourists to come. Even this place called romantic place because
the scenery is very wonderful at sunset.
LOCATION
Tanah Lot temple
located in Beraban, district of Kediri, Tabanan about 13 kilometers south of Tabanan
city.
From Ngurah Rai International Airport is about
27.2 km and can be reached in less than 1 hour by car if there is no
traffic jam.
HOW TO GET THERE?
To reach this
location, the most practical way is using travel services, rent a car or using
taxi.
I recommend using travel
services or rent a car (with or without driver). You will not be bothered and
more practical. If renting a car, you need not worry about getting lost; there
are a lot sign towards Tanah Lot because Tanah Lot is very popular tourist spot
in Bali.
I do not recommend using
taxi service because cost is more expensive which will make your expense
increasingly.
LEGEND
Tanah Lot temple was
built around the 15th century by Nirartha. He was a Brahmin from Java that
successfully spread Hindu to the people of Bali.
Tourists who visit Tanah
Lot is only allowed to enter the courtyard of temple. In fact, for women who
are menstruating are forbidden to enter the temple. This is because it is
considered sacred, so not everyone is allowed to enter worship space in it.
Only Hindus who are going to pray or perform religious rituals are allowed to
enter worship place. However, you do not have to be disappointed, because there
are many other attraction places around temple.
LOCAL CULTURES
Odalan Ritual
Odalan is a ritual or ceremony which usually done
before Galungan and Kuningan (those are feast of Hindus). On that day, Tanah
Lot temple will be filled with Hindus who came from all over Bali to pray and
seek blessings at temple.
If lucky, tourists could
watch the ritual of Odalan that is held every 210 days.
Holy Snake
Another attraction in
these places is holy snake. This snake is believed by the people of Bali as a guardian
snake who guards temple.
These snakes are sea
snake that have characteristics flat tail, has a striped yellow and black
colors have three times more powerful venom of cobras.
You can see or hold
the snake, putting money coins. Although including poisonous snakes, but you need
not worry because this snake never endanger visitors. At the time you touch or
holding snake, make a wish. It is believed by local people that our wish will
come true.
The "Tirta Pabersihan" spring
Freshwater source
called “Tirta Pabersihan” is sacred
holy water. The existence of freshwater resources will make you wondering,
because in the middle of salty sea, there is a source of fresh water that can
be used by visitors as well as Hindus, to sanctify. Visitors can wash their
face or limbs while praying.
WHAT INTERESTING IN TANAHH LOT?
Sunset
The most interesting
thing in Tanah Lot is a beautiful view at sunset that can be enjoyed around
6pm.
Just before dusk, there
are hundreds to thousands of tourists around the temple who wait for sunset.

While waiting for evening
to see sunset, tourists can walk down the beach, toward a rock with holes in
the middle. This place became a favorite location to take pictures.
Because of its natural
beauty, these places also often become one of the best locations in Bali for pre
wedding photos for the tourists.
Souvenir
From the parking lot
toward the temple of Tanah Lot, there are many stores that sell a variety of
handicrafts of Bali. For example sculptures, paintings, fabrics beach, and
accessories such as in Sukawati art market. In addition there are food and
beverage vendors. The price is relatively cheap for domestic and foreign
tourists.

Tanah Lot temple is Rp 7,500 for domestic tourists, and Rp 10,000 for foreign
tourists and parking fee is Rp. 5,000 / car
